Understanding Creative Literacy in an Age of AI

Prioritizing the augmentation and protection of human expression, perspective, and creativity.

What does it meant to have "literacy" in creativity?

Generative AI does not replace the need for creatives to eloquently express themselves

The need to use the right vocabulary to describe creative intention remains crucial, especially in regards to prompting LLMs.

Creatives need to understand the limits of AI as generative tool

Hallucinations, biases, and ____ just scratch the surface of the limits of Generative AI. Creatives should be aware of how to identify and navigate these situations.

Modern technologies are not neutral creative mediums that come without costs

Creatives should have transparency over how their artwork and data are used and understand alternative, open-source options

There is room for creative innovation within constraint and regulation

Slowing down to study the impact of technologies on users does not halt progress.

Creativity evolves through community and collaboration

Inspiration is born out of experiences and literacy is a product of engagement with existing works.

Educational framework for AI Literacy

Our curriculum was developed according to the vision that students should be able to come away from the lessons having had curated experiences with AI in creative projects as well as being conversant in AI.

Students should be able to learn from the material either independently or with instructional guidance at the discretion of each instructional team.

01

Defining AI

Students learn the basics of how AI works: where it gets its data, and how it turns that data into an output. Through hands-on analogies and comparisons, they build an intuitive sense of what AI can and can’t actually do.

02

AI In The Creative Process

Students use AI text, image, and research tools as part of their own creative work. They learn the vocabulary behind these tools and experience the moments where AI strengthens their process, and where it falls short.

03

AI Perspectives

Students reflect critically on their experience using AI, examining where they feel comfortable relying on it and where they don’t. They consider what AI changes about creative ownership, collaboration, and trust, and develop opinions on where human judgment is still especially important.
